Date: June 29, 2006 Time: 7:15 PM ET Match-Up: BP-GRC vs. 'Gaswerks' Title: The Replacements
Body: Off of their first defeat of the season, the BP-GRC were determined to turn things around and continue with their winning ways. Interim coach, Julie 'Cubby Bear' Frederick sent out the reminder to the team to be prepared for the game on Thursday, only to be shocked by the responses (or lack there of). Yes, the BP-GRC were going to have to face-off against Gaswerks without the pitching of Slavenator, the fielding and hitting of Denglish and Bruiser and the outfield heroics of Grinder and Pesicka. To make matters worse, Tranq was on the IR with a day-by-day status due a foot injury that occurred during a game of touch football (note -touch football is not sanctioned by the BP-GRC staff. Tranquilli please re-review the competition clause in your contract.) With these team members absent not only were we missing a total of over 20 years experience from our veterans, we did not have enough players to field the team. Through networking and the internet, two new players emerged to support the BP-GRC. Please welcome Deborah 'Bunt' Kelbaugh and Eric 'Bob' Evanko. Enough of the introductions, with a decision to hold his allegiance to BP-GRC, Pesicka rescheduled his flight and arrived at the field. Tranquilli also reached deep within himself, taped up his foot and hobbled onto the field (thank you 'Alieve'.) With 11 team members strong and support from our fans (thank you Mr. and Mrs. Bednar), it was time to play.
Inning 1 With their bats a blazing, the first inning was all BP-GRC. Hits by 'Cubby Bear' and 'Tarsh', a double by 'Tranquilli' and a strategic walk by 'Tummy' put 3 runs on the board early. The bottom of the first was as impressive as the top, with stellar defense and pitching, Gaswerks was held to a single run. It appeared that the Gaswerks slogan, "Good drinks, lousy service" applied to softball, too. "No drinks, lousy softball." Score 3-1 (good guys). Inning 2 The confidence continued with hits by 'Bob', 'Greeney', 'Softball Dan', 'Cubby Bear', 'Tranq' and 'Tummy' putting 2 more runs on the board. With one out, it became apparent that the Gaswerks would have to change their name to the 'Gasjerks' as the first baseman got under the skin of the BP-GRC by taking out interim coach 'Cubby Bear' with a straight arm shove to get the out at first instead of touching the base. Strong coaching from BP-GRC avoided an all out bench clearing brawl, but the team was shaken. The BP-GRC played with emotion in the bottom of the inning and held the Gasjerks to 0 runs. Score 6-1. Inning 3 How could the first baseman take out coach?!?!? Playing with vengeance, as opposed to playing for fun impacted the BP-GRC's ability to swing the bat. This produces a goose-egg from the BP-GRC with four batters up and no runs to show for it. To make matters worse, the Gasjerks were thriving off of the discontent of the BP-GRC and put in two runs. Score 6-3. Inning 4 Emotions still running high, the 4th inning was a repeat of the third. A diving catch by 'Softball Dan' reduced the damage, but the offense of the BP-GRC was nowhere to be seen. Two more runs by the Gasjerks and the score was getting too close for comfort. Score 6-5. Inning 5 This is the point in the game when Slavenator would step up and deliver a speech to refocus and inspire the team, but alas, no Slavenator. In his place, interim coaches 'Cubby Bear' and 'Softball Dan' put the teams discontent towards the first baseman aside and shifted focus to have fun. The offense and defense began to pick it back up. Several hits, followed by a running bunt from Deborah 'Bunt' Kelbaugh and a streaking line drive by Greeney put two runs on the board for the good guys. On the defensive side of the ball, solid play by the outfield and a heads up play at second by Greeney held Gaswerks to 0 runs. Score 8-5. Inning 6 Coming into the sixth, the BP-GRC decided it was time to make it 'last call' for Gaswerks. Batting through the order, each team member made it on base, which resulted in 7 runs for the BP-GRC. Enjoying a 10 run lead, the BP-GRC let up a bit on defense and allowed two runs from Gaswerks. Score 15-7. Inning 7 Honestly, other than the Tribe (yes, I'm an Indian's fan and it hurt) who loses with an eight run lead? Not the BP-GRC, final score, 15-7.
Conclusion: Two game balls were awarded to individuals that had solid showings both offensively and defensively. The first proved that you don't have to swing the bat to knock in a couple of runs. Way to go Deborah 'Bunt' Kelbaugh keep up the good work (and put a little more swing next time). The second played solid at second and produced some of the hits that lead to the momentum swing for the BP-GRC. Good job Jess 'Greeney' Greene, keep your mitt on the ground and keep reaching for the stars. Finally, congratulations to Julie 'Cubby Bear' Frederick for her first win as interim head coach.
