Date: June 8, 2006 Time: 6:15 PM ET Match-Up: BP-GRC vs. Tap Room Title: Pitchers Dual
Body: Inning 1 The heavens smiled upon the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department as the Doppler Radar showed no signs of rain. Could this be true? GAME ON! From previous experiences, it was understood that this was going to be another tough match, so the BP-GRC went through their pre-game rituals in an attempt to shake off the cob-webs from having the previous game cancelled and become mentally focused. Being the home team they took to the field first, but things started off gloomy for the BP-GRC as they were one athlete short. After several failed stalling tactics, the umpire called for the first batter to step up to the plate. Brian "Slavenator" Slaven began his stare down tactics to intimidate the first batter when, miraculously, Jess 'Greeny' Green emerged from the parking lot in a 'Fields of Dreams' fashion. Even with our team at full capacity, the consistent hitting and strong defense of Tap Room proved to be too much for our Cowboys. Score 0-2 (in favor of Tap Room).
Inning 2 Understanding that the pitcher's key statistic, ERA, is directly related to a team's defensive abilities in softball, the BP-GRC pulled together as a team and shut-out the Tap Room despite their onslaught of hard hit grounders to Dan 'Denglish' English and line drives to Jack 'Pesicka' Pesicka. Unfortunately, on the offensive front, things weren't looking much better. A sole spark was generated through a double hit by Dan 'Softball Dan' Bednar that put our first runner of the game in scoring position, but alas, we were unable to cross home plate. Score 0-2.
Inning 3 Feeling confident from the previous inning's shut-out, the BP-GRC continued to dominate the defensive side of the game. Some crafty pitching by the 'Slavenator' also accounted for the first strike out of the game. Despite the defensive surge, the top of the line-up was unable to cross home plate. Score 0-2.
Inning 4 In the top of the 4th inning it was the 'Denglish' show. Honestly, I think he accounted for all three outs. With English taking the majority of the workload, the offense was well rested and ready to go to work. A single from Slavenator, followed by a single by Julie 'Cubby Bear' Frederick and a hard shot/RBI from 'Tummy' secured the first score for the BP-GRC. With two outs, a single by 'Softball Dan' enabled 'Tummy' to complete his run around the bases. Score 2-2.
Inning 5 To quote 'Henry the Eigth I Am', second verse same as the first (well, fifth inning same as the second). They didn't score, neither did the BP-GRC. This one was going to come down to the wire. Score 2-2
Inning 6 Top of the sixth our defense held again, but it was time to put some additional runs on the board. Since we weren't successful at putting runs on the board by swinging the bat, 'Slavenator' looked outside of the box and didn't swing. Yep, our fearless leader took a walk, but with another clutch hit from 'Tummy' it would be enough to put one additional run on the board. Score 3-2.
Inning 7 To put an end to this game the task was clear, hold the Tap Room to one more shut-out inning and win. Although Tap Room was able to put together a couple of strong hits, the combination of Denglish to Katie 'Wronger' Chain ended the threat at third base and also ended the inning. The game was over and the BP-GRC found a way to win by holding Tap Room to 6 scoreless innings. Final 3-2.
Conclusion: The BP-GRC proved that winning is truly a team effort as each individual played a significant role in the defense that held the Tap Room to 6 scoreless innings. A 'shout out' is also appropriate to Slavenator who lowered his ERA 1.3 points from 7.3 to 6.0. All of that aside, one game ball was awarded to the 'King Cobra - Player of the Game'. It was awarded to an individual that accounted for all three runs in this game (2 RBI and 1 run). Congratulations Timmy 'Tummy' Roberts, once again you have proven that there is no 'I' in team, but there is an 'I' in Tim. (I'm not really sure what that means. Nonetheless, keep up the good work.)
