Date: June 15, 2006 Time: 6:15 PM ET Match-Up: BP-GRC vs. Gallo's Tap Room (Team Hell)
The game started just like any other game (that's not rained out). The teams were at the field, the umpires were ready....but something just wasn't complete. There was tension in the air. The BP - Goat Rodeo Cowboys were down three players. Not just any 3 players, three of the best:
Pitcher/Coach - Brian "Slavenator" Slaven Left Fielder - Dan "Softball Dan" Bednar Shortstop - Dan "Denglish" English
Could the Cowboys pull off a victory inspite of their missing team members? Stay tuned...
"Cubby Bear" stepped in as the interim coach. She was confident in the line-up and her team's ability to defeat Team Hell, but the team started off slow. The first two innings went by and the Goat Rodeo Cowboys remained run-less, however the defense remained tough. The highlight of the 1st two innings was after there was a single out and one runner from Team Hell on 3rd base. The pitch was thrown and the ball hit high to right field. The runner at third knew he was going to need to tag up. The ball fell and "Pesicka" was there for the catch. Knowing the situation he quickly threw the ball to home for a squeeze play. Luckily, "Tummy" was there for the play. The throw was perfect and it allowed the double-play at the plate to end the 2nd inning. Score: 0-0.
The 3rd and 4th innings didn't show much better for our Goat Rodeo Cowboys as they continued to struggle on the bats. "Tummy" had taken over the pitching responsibilities with "Slavenator" being out. Even despite 2 strike-outs from "Tummy", Team Hell still managed to pull out 2 runs in the 3rd and another 4 runs in the 4th. The Goat Rodeo Cowboys were starting to feel put out, but they weren't down yet. Score: 0-6 Team Hell.
The 5th inning renewed an offensive spark for the Cowboys. "Mc D", "Bruiser", "Pesicka", "Tarsh" and "Hussle" all batted singles to drive in 2 runs for their team. With two players on base "Grinder" walked to leave the bases loaded for the next batter. With two outs and bases loaded, "Tranq" stepped up to the plate: Ump: "Ball, plate" Ump: "Ball, outside" Another ball and "Tranq" would be able to walk in two runs! The pitch....."Tranq" swings away....The ball is up.....and over the out-fielders heads. The runners rounded the bases like the speed of light. It was a GRAND SLAM HOME RUN!!!!!! "Cubby Bear" reels in another single, the team held their opponents to zero, and the inning ended. Score: 6-6.
The game would all come down to the last inning. However, the Goat Rodeo Cowboys offensive streak was finished. 3 up...3 down...and a poor defensive showing allowed in 5 runs on Team Hell's side. Final Score: 11-6. Team Hell emerged the victors.
A big thanks and congrats go out to three individuals. (But no game balls can be given after a loss) Julie "Cubby Bear" Frederick for taking over the on and off the field leadership as interim coach and solid firstbaseman. Tim "Tummy" Roberts stepped up and did a tremendous job as pitcher, and Matt "Tranq" Tranquilli - the first grand slam homer of the season! Congrats and Thanks to all of you!
Moral of the Game: "You're not down-n-out, until you're down and there's no one out."
